Forest delineation

– When you ask the forest…

Upon reading a post from Mistra Digital Forest on LinkedIn, freely translated to “The challenge is not to find answers, but to ask the right questions” we felt that this is exactly right.

Foresters are well-versed in stand delineation, which involves grouping trees based on similar composition, age, and structure. This practice serves as a historical record of previous asset management activities. Typically, stand borders are maintained during forest plan renewals, although they may shift or merge over time for practical reasons.

Utilizing a combination of AI systems can provide novel insights into forest composition and segmentation. Various factors, such as prior management activities, soil composition, groundwater, shade, climate zone, and species, influence the natural subdivision of forests. Instead of relying solely on historical documents, we propose directly analyzing the forest.

By establishing parameters and weights, such as tree height, forest density, and species, and applying multiple AI strategies, we can identify distinct differences within the forest. Our experience indicates that this approach often reveals significant variations from traditional forest plans, offering a comprehensive view based on full coverage of individual tree data rather than test samples.
