A Changing New World:

Forest Management, Its Goals, and the Way Forward

Optimization in forest management involves selecting the best measures to achieve desired goals, considering various perspectives like life cycle stages, scope, decision basis, management measures, and goals. It also takes into account available resources and industry constraints.

Decision-making complexity has increased due to evolving goals. While financial returns remain primary, environmental considerations, biodiversity, and climate benefits are now also crucial. This requires comprehensive decision support.

Conifer Vision addresses the challenge of optimizing management throughout all life cycle stages towards complex goals. Early interventions have the most significant impact on achieving goals, but incorrect early measures can have negative effects. Reliable decision-making data is essential. Conifer focuses on early, detailed analyses, including soil preparation, early plant regrowth analysis, and young forest inventory, while also considering later life cycle stages.

Small Objects Can Cause Big Problems

Conifer aims to improve industry standards. The forest industry often relies on sample area data or national laser scans, which can have significant errors or biases. Conifer includes all tree individuals and uses photogrammetry, which offers higher resolution and color contrast compared to laser scanning. This helps identify small objects and species more accurately.

Photogrammetry models can face challenges like rotation, translation, scaling, and warping. These issues are effectively mitigated through advanced rectification techniques and Conifer has achieved outstanding results through extensive development.

Our Business

Conifer operates in the “high-resolution and scalable” segment of the forest analytics market, providing detailed decision support over large forest areas. High resolution allows for accurate analysis of individual trees.

Soil Preparation Analysis

Conifer analyzes intermittent, continuous, and targeted soil preparation, calculating density, prepared land area, and generating intensity maps.

Plant Inventory

Conifer conducts regeneration analysis on two-year-old conifers, determining positions, counting densities, and creating intensity maps. A prototype was developed for monitoring plant density within the same season as planting, combining surface identification with plant analysis.

Young Forest Inventory

Conifer provides comprehensive young forest inventory (R1/R2), including data on tree height, species, position, crown cover, and stem density, enhanced with intensity maps.

Young forest analysis considers three stages during the bare ground season: without leaves, yellowed leaves (autumn), and green leaves (summer). Summer inventories may reduce species recognition for very small trees (~0.5m), but this can be mitigated with lower flight altitudes or higher resolution cameras.
