Pre-commercial thinning of young forests with Norra Skog

Conifer Vision, together with swedish norther forest giant Norra Skog, has carried out extensive testing and field validation of our AI‑based pre‑commercial thinning analysis. Over a few days, young forests covering several hundred hectares were scanned by drone with an RGB-camera. Aerial images from 166 stands were then analysed using Conifer’s AI‑based thinning module and compared with detailed field assessments from the companies’ own organisations.
The results show that remote‑sensing‑based tree detection can deliver operationally reliable height and density information for pre‑commercial thinning planning. This allows forest managers to move from sparse sample plots to complete, geo‑referenced coverage of height and density – making it easier to prioritise which stands to treat first, how hard to thin, and where the risk of under‑ or over‑thinning is highest. The method fits into existing planning workflows and can be replicated across thousands of hectares without a proportional increase in field work, turning tree‑level detection into a scalable operational tool rather than a research prototype.
Following these successful tests, we are now moving into operational use together with Norra Skog, where drones and AI‑based workflows now is being integrated into daily operations. The workflow supports Norra in quickly finding the right stands to treat, planning operations, following up completed thinning, and communicating decisions to contractors and forest owners.
